Measles Exposure Alert: Fiona Stanley Hospital Emergency Department Visited by Infected Person
WA Health has issued a critical measles warning, urging residents to take immediate action after identifying a busy emergency department as the latest exposure site. Visitors to the Fiona Stanley Hospital emergency department on Monday night between 6:50 pm and 10:05 pm are advised to monitor for symptoms up to 18 days after possible exposure.
The alert highlights a concerning development, as the site is linked to the most recent confirmed case in a returned traveler from Bali. This alert follows Thursday's public health warning about the state's first case of the year, with several exposure sites identified, including retail outlets and a pharmacy.
Measles is a highly contagious virus, typically developing symptoms after about 10 days. These symptoms include fever, fatigue, runny nose, sore eyes, and a cough, followed by a red, blotchy rash that appears three to four days later. The rash starts on the face and spreads to the rest of the body.
WA experienced its worst measles caseload in 30 years last year, with a total of 63 cases, following clusters in the South West, Pilbara, and the metro area. Health authorities are emphasizing the importance of checking vaccination status to ensure measles-containing vaccines are up to date.
