In the world of rugby, few journeys are as remarkable as that of Michael van Vuuren, who stands out not just for his talent but also for the sheer number of clubs he has played for. While Leicester's emerging star, Billy Searle, has recently made headlines with his impressive performances at Welford Road, such as scoring a hat-trick and racking up 25 points in a Champions Cup match against Bayonne, his journey is just a fraction of what some players experience.
Searle, who seems to have finally found his footing after a career filled with transitions, has played for ten different clubs, as confirmed by rugby statistician Stuart Farmer. His diverse career path includes stints across England and France. Yet, compared to van Vuuren, Searle’s experience may seem quite stable.
Van Vuuren, who is currently building a coaching career in North East England, holds the record for playing at 15 different clubs throughout his time in the game—just two short of the professional era record held by South African prop Ross Geldenhuys. Beginning his rugby journey at Free State Cheetahs, where he became the youngest player to compete in the Currie Cup, van Vuuren eventually ventured to Europe, joining some of the continent's most prestigious clubs in a whirlwind career.
His journey was not without its challenges. Frequent changes in coaching staff, recruitment strategies that didn’t always favor him, visa complications, and unfortunate circumstances—such as being part of teams that faced financial difficulties, notably Wasps—marked his time as a professional player.
Reflecting on his extensive career, van Vuuren shared, "I’ve experienced a variety of clubs, each with its highs and lows." Notably, he remembers Leicester for its deep-rooted history and the passionate local fanbase. "The atmosphere there is unique, embodying a hard-working spirit," he noted, indicating the club's significance in his life.
He described playing for Bath as feeling like royalty, surrounded by top-notch talent, which continues to benefit the team today. Northampton also left a lasting impression on him due to its great coaching staff and talented players. His tenure at Newcastle, while challenging, provided invaluable lessons that he cherishes.
If forced to pick a favorite among all the clubs, van Vuuren would lean towards Wasps. What began as a brief trial evolved into a longer stay filled with memorable experiences. He praised Joe Launchbury, calling him the best captain he ever had, and highlighted Lee Blackett's exceptional coaching abilities. "The environment created by the coaching team and players felt like family, and I was excited to return every day," he reminisced.
With a strong belief that Wasps could have been champions if they had remained intact, he hopes to see the club return to the pitch in the future.
Having retired in 2024 at the age of 34, van Vuuren's playing career included never exceeding 25 appearances for any club, yet his impact on the game remains significant. Although he planned to continue playing in Major League Rugby (MLR) in the United States, an MCL injury while playing for Newcastle prompted a shift into coaching sooner than expected. Now involved with various teams, including Alnwick RFC, Gateshead College, Northumbria University, and Northumberland Men’s U20s, he finds fulfillment in watching his players grow and aims to positively influence their lives.
