The Philadelphia Phillies are shaking things up with their Spring Training invites, sparking excitement and debate among fans and analysts alike. Will these prospects live up to the hype?
The Phillies have invited a whopping 27 non-roster players to join their Spring Training, as revealed on Friday. Among them, two names stand out: Justin Crawford and Aidan Miller, both highly anticipated prospects.
Justin Crawford, the outfielder, is expected to compete for the starting center field position on opening day. With an impressive minor league batting average of .322, Crawford's hitting style raises some concerns as he tends to hit ground balls frequently. His defensive skills are also under scrutiny, but his athleticism is expected to compensate for any initial errors as he adjusts to the major league level.
Aidan Miller, the Phillies' prized prospect, is unlikely to make the Opening Day roster, but don't count him out just yet. If an infielder stumbles due to injury or poor performance, Miller could step in as a replacement. Despite a slow start in 2025, he finished strong, boasting an impressive .356/.491/.607 slash line in 173 plate appearances across August and September, including 37 at the Triple-A level.
Another young talent to watch is Aroon Escobar, a 21-year-old infielder who hit .270 with a .774 OPS across Single A, High A, and Double A last season. And let's not forget Dante Nori, the Phillies' 2024 first-round pick, who is also part of this non-roster group.
Outfielder Bryan De La Cruz is a wildcard in this mix. With his MVP title in the Dominican Winter League and 491 major league games under his belt, he could challenge for Brandon Marsh's left-field platoon partner spot if he shines during Spring Training.
But here's the full roster of non-roster invitees, including some familiar names and rising stars:
- LHP: Génesis Cabrera, Tucker Davidson, Tim Mayza, Andrew Walling
- RHP: Andrew Bechtold, Jonathan Hernández, Michael Mercado, Trevor Richards, Bryse Wilson
- Catchers: Kehden Hettiger, Mark Kolozsvary, Paul McIntosh, René Pinto, Caleb Ricketts
- Infielders: Keaton Anthony, Christian Cairo, Carson DeMartini, Aroon Escobar, Aidan Miller, Liover Peguero, Bryan Rincon, José Rodríguez, and Felix Reyes (INF/OF)
- Outfielders: Dylan Campbell, Justin Crawford, Bryan De La Cruz, Dante Nori
And this is where it gets interesting. With such a diverse group of players, the Phillies are setting themselves up for a competitive Spring Training. But will these prospects prove their worth and make the cut? Only time will tell.
