In a significant development, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has revealed that it will soon announce its stance regarding the recently released Constitution Review Report. This decision comes after the party directed a dedicated joint committee to thoroughly examine the findings of the report.
Chaired by Professor Henry Kwasi Prempeh, the committee submitted its detailed report to President John Dramani Mahama on December 22. Among the noteworthy proposals outlined are suggestions to extend the presidential term from the existing four years to five years and to reduce the minimum age requirement for presidential candidates from 40 to 30.
Additionally, the committee advocates for a clear division between the legislative and executive branches of government. This would mean that no Member of Parliament would serve as a minister, which could significantly alter the current political landscape. Furthermore, the report recommends maintaining the parliamentary seat count at the current total of 276.
On Tuesday, in a post shared via social media, the NPP’s National Organiser, known as Nana B or Henry Nana Boakye, emphasized that the party has already been actively involved in the constitutional review process. He explained that a specialized team was formed within the party, led by Hon. Anyimadu and Frank Davies Esq., to contribute proposals to the Constitutional Review Committee.
Following the final submission of the committee's report to the President, Nana B indicated that the party's leadership is now engaged in a careful evaluation of the recommendations put forward. He noted, "The General Secretary of the Party has instructed the joint committee to analyze these proposals and provide guidance to the National Council of the Party accordingly."
To ensure a unified front, he urged fellow party members to refrain from making public comments about the proposals until the internal review process has been finalized. He reassured them that the party's official position on the matter will be communicated at the appropriate time.
