This innovation is a continuation of Nike's journey with air technology, which began in the late 1970s with the Nike Tailwind. Since then, Nike has explored visible air pockets with the iconic Air Max series. However, translating this technology to garments has been a challenge. Lotti reveals that the breakthrough came with the discovery of a suitable fabric that could contain the air while remaining flexible.
"We experimented with an ACG jacket with air 20 years ago, but we didn't have the right material. Now, the airbag is the jacket itself. Finding a fabric that could contain the air was the key. It sounds simple, but it was incredibly difficult."
And this is the part most people miss: without a traditional filling, Nike has the freedom to explore new designs. Lotti explains, "With a puffer jacket, you're usually trying to contain feathers, which limits the design. But with the Air Milano Jacket, the structure is unconstrained, opening up a world of possibilities."
For Team USA at this year's Olympics, a special version of the jacket has been created. It features Olympic-specific details like a flag, a patch on the arm, and an Olympic logo on the chest. Lotti believes that good design not only solves problems but also evokes emotion. "On the inside of the Milano jacket, you'll find graphics of the Garden of Gods, a mountain range in Colorado where the US team trains. There's even an eagle with victory signs in its feathers. It's these little details that make it special."
