Four new astronauts have embarked on a journey to the International Space Station (ISS), replacing their colleagues who returned to Earth early due to a medical evacuation. This marks NASA's first-ever medical evacuation during a mission, a significant milestone in space exploration. The replacements, Jack Hathaway, Andrei Fedyaev, Jessica Meir, and Sophia Adenot, are set to join the three astronauts who have been keeping the space station operational over the past month. The mission is expected to last eight to nine months, with the crew arriving at the ISS the day after their launch.
The new astronauts will undertake various critical tasks, including testing a water filter designed to convert drinking water into emergency IV fluid, utilizing an ultrasound system powered by artificial intelligence and augmented reality, and conducting ultrasound scans on their jugular veins for a blood clot study. They will also simulate moon-landing skills, with Sophia Adenot, the second Frenchwoman to venture into space, making her debut in this endeavor. Her inspiration stems from Claudie Haignere's historic flight to Russia's Mir space station in 1996, which occurred when Adenot was just 14 years old.
