A Shocking Move: G2 Esports' IGL Valyn on the Sudden Departure of JonahP
In a surprising turn of events, G2 Esports' decision to part ways with their Canadian player, JonahP, left little room for a new team search and caught everyone off guard, especially considering the organization's impressive performances in 2025.
G2 Esports, a consistent force in the VALORANT Champions scene, not only qualified for the 2025 VALORANT Champions but also achieved remarkable results, finishing second at Masters Bangkok and securing a top-five placement at Masters Toronto. These achievements set a high bar for the team's future endeavors.
In an exclusive interview with Esports Insider at the 2026 Americas Kickoff pre-event press conference, G2's IGL, Jacob 'Valyn' Batio, revealed the truth behind JonahP's removal. "It was a sudden decision, one that we made in the heat of the moment," Valyn explained. "We were always seeking small improvements, and this Offseason was particularly hectic. No one saw it coming, but we believed it was necessary."
Valyn further elaborated on the team's decision, stating, "We felt Andrej 'babybay' could bring a unique mental edge to our international events, something we lacked before. When leaf was absent during Stage 2, we noticed an improvement in our performance with babybay, and those moments are still fresh in everyone's memory. G2 looked rejuvenated, and we wanted to carry that momentum into 2026 with babybay on our starting roster."
Babybay, adding to Valyn's comments, said, "Jacob hit the nail on the head. My role here is to keep the team focused, especially mentally. I assist Valyn with his calling strategies and ensure everyone stays sharp, even when distractions arise."
Talking about his return to competitive VALORANT and his individual performance, babybay added, "Finding my form again has been enjoyable, and creating my unique playstyle with these new agents keeps everyone guessing."
G2 Esports' International Ambitions
G2 Esports has established itself as one of the most consistent teams in the VCT since joining the International League in 2024. However, the organization is yet to claim its first international title.
The roster came tantalizingly close at Masters Bangkok but fell just short in a heart-wrenching best-of-five series against T1. Valyn acknowledged the mental challenges the team faced on stage and expressed hope that bringing in babybay would be a turning point.
"Last year was a mix of triumphs and setbacks. We crashed and burned at Champs in Paris, and it hit us hard. In Toronto, we managed a top-four finish, but let's be honest, it took a miracle comeback from a 3-11 deficit to get there, and even then, it wasn't enough. We're determined to secure that elusive first-place finish. This move might be the key, or it might not, but we believe it's the right path for our team. It was a tough decision to part ways with JonahP, but we're ready to see where this journey takes us," Valyn concluded.
All matches from the event will be streamed live on VCT Americas' official Twitch and YouTube channels, offering fans an opportunity to witness G2 Esports' quest for international glory.
