Imagine pouring your heart and soul into a creative project, only to see it allegedly twisted, manipulated, and ultimately, exploited. That's the explosive situation unfolding within the heavy metal band Dogma, known for their striking nun-themed stage personas. Accusations of "manipulation" and "mistreatment" have ripped the band apart, leaving fans reeling and questioning everything they thought they knew. But here's where it gets controversial...
Last month, a united front of former members – singer Grace Jane Pasturini (AKA Lilith), and guitarists Amber Maldonado (Lamia) and Patri Grief (Rusalka) – dropped a bombshell. In a joint statement, they accused Dogma's management and leadership of a litany of offenses, including mistreating both the band members themselves and, shockingly, the band's dedicated fanbase.
"We were part of Dogma. We love this project, but what's being sold today is not Dogma," the statement declared. "During the tours, we saw unilateral decisions, broken promises, manipulation, mistreatment, and lies to the fans." It's a powerful indictment, painting a picture of a band allegedly hijacked from within.
The former members didn't hold back, claiming that "the person who now controls the project" is a "threat" to the band's very future. They emphasized that this individual, pointedly described as a non-musician, had allegedly transformed the band into a soulless brand, treating its members as "disposable pieces." The accusations went even further, alleging a betrayal of the artists, their partners, and, most importantly, the fans who had embraced Dogma's unique vision.
In a direct appeal to their fans, the former members urged them to take action. "Don't support a lie," they pleaded. "The social networks using the name Official Dogma no longer represent the real band or what we stand for." They called for transparency, demanding refunds for unmet promises and warning against manipulation. And this is the part most people miss... they specifically targeted the band's masks, stating: "Masks were meant to protect identity, not to replace people. The only one who needs to take off the mask is him." Their final words were a call to arms: "The power to change this story starts with your support. We will keep going. The music, the creativity, and the truth are on our side. We put our souls into this project, and that's why you were able to connect with us. No manager should be allowed to strip that away."
Dogma's response was swift and carefully worded. "We are aware of recent online statements by some former, non-original members of Dogma," their statement began. "While we respect everyone who has contributed to our journey, we want to be clear that Dogma has always been and will continue to be much bigger than any one individual."
The band asserted that Dogma was "founded on creativity, collaboration, and evolution," framing the internal turmoil as a natural part of the artistic process. They thanked all past and present members for their contributions, but emphasized that Dogma's "vision and music continue to move forward through the dedication of the current team and the support of our fans." The statement concluded with a reaffirmation of Dogma's core values: "authenticity, freedom of expression, and connection through art." They ended with a powerful message stating that Dogma "was never about who we are, it's about what YOU choose to become…"
But the controversy didn't stop there. Musician Kim Jennett added fuel to the fire, claiming she was offered the role of Dogma's new singer in 2024 but turned it down after receiving an "insulting" contract. "I want to share my side of the story," she stated, "Because I know the women involved legally may be unable to share certain aspects of their story, and I have proof of that. I'm speaking out in solidarity with them. As women in music, we've got to have each other's backs and call this kind of thing out so it stops happening again."
Jennett's allegations were particularly damning, focusing on the alleged anonymity and control exerted over the band members. "What makes me sick about all of this is the anonymity," she said. "The women are masked, silenced, and controlled by contracts that stop them from speaking out, with legal threats hanging over them if they do, and I have the proof of all this."
She described the contract she received as "one of the most insulting things I've seen in my 15-year career," claiming her lawyer deemed it "essentially 'slave labor'" and advised her to avoid it. Jennett expressed empathy for the women who had signed similar contracts, suggesting they were "sold a dream, manipulated with false promises and hope, into signing something that ultimately exploited them."
Jennett further explained that the issue wasn't just about the alleged low pay (reportedly $100 per show), but also about the extensive control exerted by management. She claimed the contracts legally bound the women to hide behind characters and remain silent, making them "replaceable and exploited, all disguised behind a mask of 'feminism.'"
Adding another layer to the unfolding drama, Amber Maldonado, one of the original whistleblowers, issued a further statement detailing alleged mistreatment related to her work schedule and compensation. "Management kept instigating fights about my work schedule," she said. "I was asked how I was compensating his company for the lost money from missing a meet and greet. I do those for free. How am I being compensated for the paid work I'm missing to play shows? On my days off from tour, I had to go out for interviews. I normally love interviews, but not when management writes pages of AI word salad I'm supposed to follow. I was never compensated for these."
Former Dogma guitarist Alice Chiara (Lamia III) has also addressed her departure from the band. "After my shows in Europe, I had no choice but to step out of Dogma about a month and a half ago," she explained. "During my last experience with Dogma's management, I faced several issues, but my social networks are not the place for details. What I want to express, though, is that the main reason behind my departure from Dogma was the U.S. tour, which I was supposed to play without being granted a work visa to perform there." Chiara also expressed dismay at learning about future tour dates through social media rather than directly from management. She said she "shouldn’t have to find out that kind of information from social media" and she was told, “there is still time.”
NME has reached out to Dogma for comment on these latest allegations. The band remains scheduled to embark on an Australian tour later this month, followed by dates in the UK and Europe in the spring.
