"Cenotes are far older than the Blue Lake and the volcano itself," Lewis explains. "About 5,000 years ago, the volcano erupted through the limestone, creating the Valley Lake and Blue Lake. However, these large sinkholes, like the Little Blue Lake, could be at least 100,000 years old, and my estimation is they're closer to 300,000 years, or even older."
The Little Blue Lake is part of a ragged fault line running from Mount Schank to Kongorong, with sinkholes serving as pathways for groundwater movement. Lewis suggests these sinkholes formed over time, with the Little Blue Lake's distinctive round basin contrasting the smaller, younger Kilsby Sinkhole nearby.
Local mayor Kylie Boston describes the Little Blue Lake as a special, unique place, a natural waterhole accessible to all. Swimmers and tourists alike rave about its beauty and depth, offering a unique experience. However, the lake also presents a challenge, with people diving from the rocky cliffs, a practice the council discourages.
"It's a rite of passage for the kids," says Matt Wilson, a local resident. Mayor Boston adds, "We recommend against jumping, but we want people to enjoy the waterhole. That's why we installed stairs and a platform years ago, to make it accessible."
The Little Blue Lake holds cherished memories for locals, a place to cool off on hot days. Lewis expresses his amazement at the community's love for this ancient wonder, a true Australian treasure.
"I saw over 500 people there on a hot January weekend," Lewis recalls. "I felt so proud that our community has such a fabulous waterhole."
