Big changes are shaking up Coastal Carolina football. After a rocky end to the season, the program has officially parted ways with head coach Tim Beck, a move that’s already stirring major conversation among fans and analysts alike.
The university confirmed that defensive coordinator Jeremiah Johnson will take over as interim head coach for the upcoming bowl game. This decision follows a tough downward slide — a three-game losing streak that closed out a disappointing 6–6 season. Despite leading Coastal Carolina to a third consecutive bowl berth, Beck's overall record of 20–18 over his three-year tenure wasn’t enough to secure his future with the Chanticleers.
And here’s the tough truth most people can’t ignore: when Coastal lost this year, it often wasn’t even close. The Chanticleers were outscored by a combined 110–17 in their last two matchups against South Carolina and James Madison. Even more alarming, five of the team’s six defeats came by margins of at least 38 points. The only competitive loss was a 45–40 shootout against Clay Helton’s struggling Georgia Southern squad.
Behind the scenes, things were moving fast. A staff meeting set for 12:30 p.m. ET was expected to make the separation official and identify the interim leadership plan. This departure now marks Coastal Carolina’s second head coaching search in under three years — a quick turnaround for a program that had once been a rising star. Beck himself took the job in December 2022, succeeding Jamey Chadwell after Chadwell departed to become Liberty’s head coach following Hugh Freeze’s exit to Auburn. Ironically, Freeze has also been dismissed from Auburn as part of this same coaching cycle. College football, as always, shows no mercy.
When Beck first arrived, optimism was high. His debut season in 2023 produced eight wins — not bad for a first-time head coach after three decades of working as an assistant at powerhouse programs such as Nebraska, Ohio State, and Texas. Yet even in that relatively strong season, troubling patterns emerged: most of Coastal’s losses under Beck were lopsided. Of the 18 defeats during his tenure, 15 came by double digits, and 9 of them by 20 points or more. That pattern ultimately became impossible to overlook.
The gap between Coastal Carolina and conference rival James Madison has also grown into a glaring issue. The Dukes’ recent 59–10 demolition of the Chanticleers in the regular-season finale underscored just how far apart the two programs have drifted. In fact, Beck’s teams went winless in three meetings against JMU, losing by a staggering combined total of 154–31.
As the program begins a fresh search for its next leader, sources have already named South Carolina defensive coordinator Clayton White as an early candidate to watch. His previous working relationship with Coastal Athletic Director Chance Miller at South Carolina could make that connection particularly intriguing.
But here’s where it gets controversial: Was Beck given enough time to truly build his vision, or did the program pull the plug too soon? After all, turning around a mid-major program with fluctuating resources isn’t exactly a quick task.
What do you think — did Coastal Carolina make the right choice by moving on from Tim Beck, or should they have shown a little more patience? Drop your thoughts in the comments — this one’s sure to divide opinions.
