In a disheartening turn of events, the rising star Adam Radwan has seen his aspirations of joining England's Six Nations squad come to an abrupt halt due to an injury.
The Leicester winger, known for his impressive form, had been making significant strides towards inclusion after achieving remarkable success with back-to-back doubles against formidable opponents Saracens and Bayonne over the previous weekends.
However, Leicester's head coach, Geoff Parling, has unfortunately disclosed that the 28-year-old is suffering from a "lower leg" ailment that will require surgery, potentially sidelining him for the entire championship.
Parling shared, "He’s had a scan and is scheduled to meet with the surgeon very soon. We won’t have specific details until after the surgery, but it appears to be more of a medium-term injury rather than a short-term setback."
Radwan's recent performances have been extraordinary, yet Parling pointed out the depth in Leicester's wing options, highlighting players like Gabe Hamer-Webb, who shined last week, and Ollie Hassell-Collins, recognized as a strong competitor on the wing. "We’ve got a solid pool of exciting outside backs," he noted.
Since joining the Tigers from Newcastle just over a year ago, Radwan has made a remarkable impact, netting 20 tries in just 24 appearances, which had reignited hopes of donning the prestigious England jersey once again.
His last appearance for the national team was four years ago against Tonga, although he did represent England A recently in the autumn against a New Zealand side. His electrifying speed and finishing prowess have certainly caught the attention of many within the Premiership this season.
Former England international Austin Healey expressed his bewilderment on social media, stating, "How is Radwan not in top 4 English wingers?" This sentiment echoes a growing conversation among fans and analysts alike.
It’s noteworthy that Steve Borthwick had previously included six other wingers in his squad during the autumn series: Manny Feyi-Waboso, Tommy Freeman, Tom Roebuck, Henry Arundell, Cadan Murley, and Noah Caluori. Though Radwan was building a compelling case for selection, those hopes have now sadly faded.
With Borthwick set to announce his Six Nations squad on Friday, January 23, the rugby community is left to ponder the implications of Radwan’s absence. How do you think this will affect England's chances in the upcoming tournament? Share your thoughts!
